Writing Center FAQs
What is the Writing Center?
The Writing Center offers students a supportive environment where they may work in collaboration with professional tutors and become skilled, confident writers. Students also have access to computers to revise and edit their work as well as software programs to improve their grammar skills.
What do I do if I want to speak to a tutor about my writing?
You may simply walk in the Center and ask the receptionist if a tutor is available. If one is, you may have a tutoring session immediately. If not, you may schedule an appointment at your convenience.
Can I just stop by the Center to see a tutor?
Of course! If a tutor is available at that time, you can start your tutoring session immediately. If not, you may schedule an appointment to reserve tutoring time that fits your schedule.
What can a tutor do to help me with my writing?
A tutor can help you:
- get started on an assignment if you don't know how to begin
- generate ideas
- organize and develop your paragraphs
- recognize and eliminate writing problems
- document sources
- improve writing skill
- become a more critical thinker
- learn how to edit your work
What do I need to bring to the tutoring session?
If you are working on a particular writing assignment, the tutor will find it beneficial to see the professor?s assignment sheet or notes you have taken about the assignment. That way we can provide you with the best advice. Along with pen and paper (and textbook, if necessary), bring any portion of the writing assignment you have completed.
Can the Center help me with grammar?
Of course! A tutor can help you identify and correct grammar problems. Also, our computers have Plato and Focus on Grammar, two software programs that you will find particularly helpful as they are self-paced.
Will the tutor fix my paper for me?
No. The tutor works with you, not for you! The goal is for you to become a skilled editor of your own work, so the tutor will help you identify errors and provide individual instruction about ways to correct them.
How long can a tutoring session last?
Typically, it lasts a minimum of thirty minutes.
How much does a tutoring session cost?
Nothing! Tutoring services are free to all HCCS students.
Can the Writing Center help me with a research paper for the psychology course I'm taking?
Absolutely! The tutors are skilled professionals who can assist you with any writing assignment in any discipline.
Can a tutor help me to prepare a resume or cover letter for a job?
Of course! A tutor can also make suggestions for improvement on your university application essay.
I'm really a strong writer, and sometimes I just need to ask a quick question. Is the Center only for people who have major problems with writing?
Come in and ask your question! The Center is available to all HCCS students.
