HCC Closed Through Sunday, September 21
Houston Community College announced Wednesday afternoon that all facilities will be closed through Sunday, September 21. All colleges will resume classes on a normal schedule Monday, September 22.
Based on safety considerations and the condition of the facilities, HCC officials addressed the challenges faced by students, faculty and staff and decided to stay closed until Monday.
HCC’s facilities are in varying degrees of usability. A number of campuses do not have power. Two, in particular, have proven more problematic. The Performing Arts Center at the Town and Country Campus does not have power. And Codwell Hall lost part of its roof when equipment stored on the roof was blown off.
According to Dr. Mary S. Spangler, HCC Chancellor seventy-five percent of HCC’s facilities are ready to go today; a few may have some minor inconveniences. HCC administrators, however, also considered the impact of Hurricane Ike on the lives of its students, faculty, staff and their families and personal property. These strong concerns played an important role in the decision to remain closed until Monday.
Dr. Spangler noted that an important part of the recovery process is to get back to a normal routine, to focus on controlling that which you can: school, study and work.
