Getting Started in Your Role

On your first day at Houston Community College, you will be welcomed at an onboarding experience with other professionals who are entering the community.  During onboarding, you will learn about HCC, participate in discussions, become familiar with the HCC web and complete your benefits enrollment. We are happy that you chose to join our community and want to ensure you have the information and tools to get off to a good start. (Onboarding is 3 days for full-time employees and 4 hours for part-time employees.)

Professional Education & Job Essential Skill Development

At Your Work Location

Partner with your manager to identify your initial assignments; the purpose of your work; how it fits into your department or campus overarching mission and goals; and how you can begin making immediate contributions.

Schedule, Job Duties, and Expectations

  • Clarify your first week’s schedule, and confirm required and recommended training.
  • Set up your personal workspace.
  • Ask your manager for an overview of the functional area – its purpose, organizational structure, and goals.
  • Review your job description, outline of duties, and expectations. Ask how your job fits in the department, and how your job and department contribute to the College.
  • Review hours of work. Ask questions about policies and procedures for overtime, use of vacation and sick time, holidays, as well as work policies or procedures.
  • Ask any other questions.

Socialization

  • Be prepared to meet coworkers on the first day.
  • Introduce yourself to others in the workplace.

Work Environment
Ask your department chair about:

  • Employee key(s) and building access card.
  • Transportation and parking.
  • Department-specific safety and emergency information.
  • Taking a campus tour.
  • How to get additional supplies.

Technology Access and Related Issues

  • Ask about your computer and setting up voicemail.

Just-In-Time for Faculty is a set of professional development resources designed to help faculty to quickly become acclimated to HCC, offering an overview of policies and procedures, and teaching resources that are critical to effective service both administratively and in the classroom during your first days at HCC.
