HCC-ASPIRE celebrates philanthropy and education
May 5, 2016
For the hundreds of guests attending the HCC-ASPIRE Awards Ceremony at The Junior League of Houston, the evening was filled with laughter, camaraderie but also immense pride. Being part of the most diverse city in the nation has the advantage of enjoying the cultural contributions of diverse races.
“Diversity is a blessing. Acceptance is a blessing. Texas is the best state in the nation because of its diversity. We are blessed to be in Houston, Texas and I am so proud of what this community has to offer,” said Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos, the winner of the Immigrant Achievement Award.
HCC-ASPIRE (Asian Scholarship Program Inspiring Results and Excellence) began in 2013. The program has awarded thousands of dollars to deserving college students of Asian-American descent. This year, the ceremony recognized five civic and business leaders who have collaborated to higher education.
“We are proud to honor these leaders for their dedication and commitment to the goals of HCC-ASPIRE. Their hard work is providing opportunities in higher learning to minority college students,” said Neeta Sane, HCC Board of Trustees, District VII, founder and president of the program.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner received the Public Service Award.
“I tilt my hat off to HCC,” said Turner, “To be the most diverse community college of the country speaks volumes. Only in Houston can you travel the globe in one day. Our diversity is our strength. Diversity is our asset. “
HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado gave special words of commendation to the representatives of the consulates of various Asian countries.
“Because of our relationship with the leaders who support HCC-ASPIRE, students have exposure to the international experience. We partner with the Raindrop Turkish House to support our students understanding the environment in Turkey. Our students are travelling to Turkey to become better leaders. Partnering with the educational division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural we have students going to Taiwan and learn how to become entrepreneurs. We are proud of these students and we are proud of the partnerships.”
Having a vision into the future, according to Board Chair, Adrian Tamez is what makes this year’s honorees special.
