HCC to ‘tee it up’ for scholarships

Jul 28, 2016

Preparing the next generation of employees for manufacturing careers is the driving force behind a golf tournament to benefit students in the Houston Community College Manufacturing Center of Excellence.

HCC is joining Lee College and San Jacinto College at the third Annual East Harris County Manufacturers Association (EHCMA) Workforce Development Golf Tournament. The event raises money to support technical student scholarship programs at the three colleges.

“HCC is very pleased to become a new member receiving scholarship support from EHCMA,” said Carme Williams, executive director, HCC Foundation during the recent tournament kick-off event at Top Golf in Webster. “We look forward to building a stronger relationship with EHCMA.”

Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor, greeted supporters of the golf tournament and expressed his gratitude to EHCMA for playing an important role in the future success of HCC students.

The EHCMA is an alliance of more than 130 chemical manufacturers, refiners, and supporting distribution facilities in Baytown, Deer Park, Houston, LaPorte, North Channel, and Pasadena. The goal of the annual tournament is to increase the capabilities of these institutions and enhance the opportunity for local residents to enter programs which provide the skills and certifications necessary for entry into the craft and process operator fields.

The tournament takes place at Wildcat Golf Course. Last year, golfers raised nearly $300,000 for scholarships. With an anticipated attendance of 350 players this year, the hope is to raise even more green.
