On May 25, Houston Community College (HCC) and Dwyer Workforce Development entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to train and support up to 500 new healthcare professionals a year.

HCC Southeast College President Frances Villagran-Glover, D.A., and Dwyer Chief Executive Officer Barb Clapp signed the agreement to launch the HCC/Dwyer Registered Apprenticeship Program. Under the program, Dwyer will support up to 500 apprentices a year for two years to earn their Certified Nurse Aide certificate from HCC.

The partnership will offer high-potential residents from Houston and the surrounding area the opportunity to become Dwyer Scholars. Dwyer Scholars earn their CNA certificate at no cost so they can become members of the high-demand healthcare workforce.

Two Dwyer Scholars, Richard Cortez and Genevieve Rice, attended the event and were recognized and congratulated by HCC and Dwyer staff.

Several workforce and educational leaders attended the event hosted by HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences. They included: Juliet Stipeche, executive director of Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast; Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Ph.D., HCC Board of Trustees chair and District VII representative; Eva L. Loredo, HCC Board of Trustees secretary and District VII representative; Reagan Flowers, Ph.D., HCC Board of Trustees District IV representative; Robert Glaser, MBA, HCC Board of Trustees District V representative; Phillip Nicotera, M.D., president of HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences; Madeline Burillo-Hopkins, Ed.D., HCC Southwest College president and vice chancellor of Workforce Instruction; Michael Edwards, J.D., president of HCC Northeast College; and Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., president of HCC Online College.
