HCC wins major apprenticeship grant from Texas Workforce Commission

Apr 3, 2025

Houston Community College’s (HCC) Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship Hub has received a $282,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission as part of the Apprenticeship Training Program.

The funds will support HCC in delivering apprenticeship-related instruction in high-demand occupations, including plumbing, sheet metal and electrical technician pathways. The grant runs through August, supporting as many as 550 new apprentices.

“We are working hard to strengthen workforce readiness by partnering with employers and labor organizations to expand access to career training and increase the pipeline of skilled workers in these essential fields,” said Christina Robinson, Ed.D., executive director of Work-based Learning and Industry Partnerships.

The Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship HUB is the main source in the region for mobilizing partners, students and stakeholders into responding to the challenges and priorities set forth in creating connected and sustainable workforce training for regional employers. It brings people seeking learning and employment through an apprenticeship into contact with companies seeking new workers or who are willing to train workers for their industry.

“Apprenticeships are becoming a top employee recruitment tool for businesses as well as a meaningful learning experiences for potential workers,” said HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D. “As part of our mission, HCC is providing pathways to success for motivated job seekers of all ages and backgrounds.”

Last year, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship named HCC an Apprenticeship Ambassador, recognizing the college’s role serving in promoting, expanding and diversifying registered apprenticeships.
