Board of Trustee Statements

Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Houston Community College Board Chair Statement Concerning HCC Redistricting

Apr 20, 2023

College redistricting is a complicated process. It requires the thoughtful input of trustees and the community with the goal of assuring voting balance among all constituents. In addition to the consideration of community interests, the Board is tasked with complying with the Voting Rights Act when redrawing district boundaries.

After a thorough process that included informative meetings in each Houston Community College (HCC) trustee district, and with input from the college’s redistricting team, the HCC Board of Trustees has adopted map Plan 1A, believing that this plan best holds to the Board’s agreed upon criteria, such as: to preserve existing boundaries when possible and preserve constituent relations.

Plan 1A makes minor adjustments to the boundaries of each trustee district, while maintaining the balance and influence of each district. This important work is the result of meaningful dialogue with the community and the HCC governing board. I am proud to stand with my colleagues in support of this monumental effort.
